It’s been a while since we’ve heard new music from Toby Diligent. 4 years since his group’s last album release, and nearly 7 years since his last solo release, this album has been a long time coming. For those unfamiliar, Toby is one third, and founding member of longstanding Des Moines indie hip hop act, prettygirlhatemachine. His latest offering, titled “Bad New Days”, is his most refined work to date. Picking up where he left off on his last LP, Toby stays in pursuit with his direct and introspective flow, over his sample heavy, golden era inspired production. We also see him take on a few different stylistic approaches on this record that he has not attempted before. The 12 track project is once again solely produced by Toby himself, with the exception of two tracks, featuring production by local standout producer, The Dropouts. Cuts and scratches on the record are provided by the mighty and highly skilled DJ Touchnice. “Bad New Days” is a very solid rap album, and is a nice artistic step forward for Toby Diligent. Recommended for any hip hop fan.
